If you are a student in Calgary with a car that no longer runs, failed inspection or is not worth fixing, the quickest route is to sell it to a local junk car buyer that tows for free and pays on pickup. Compare that with donating it, listing it privately or hauling it yourself. Then cancel your registration and insurance so nothing keeps billing you. This guide covers each option, the paperwork, and what to check before you accept an offer.
TL;DR
- A junk car buyer is the fastest option for a non-running car: you call, they quote, tow it and pay you at pickup. We offer this in Calgary and Okotoks.
- Donation, private sale and parting out all work, but each costs you time, which most students lack around exams and moves.
- After pickup, cancel the registration at a registry agent and sort out your insurance. Registration refunds arrive by cheque, not instantly.
- Only deal with a buyer who is clear about towing, payment and paperwork before they show up, and check that they operate as a licensed business.
- Have your ID, ownership papers and keys ready, and empty the car of your belongings first.

Why students end up with a car they need gone
Student car problems follow a pattern. A $1,500 used car bought in first year dies in the second winter. A parent's old sedan gets passed down, then fails inspection. Or the semester ends, a co-op or job takes you to another city, and a car that sat in a stall for months is suddenly a liability.
The common thread is time and money. You do not have weeks to answer messages from strangers on marketplaces, and you probably cannot pay for a tow to a scrapyard. A car sitting in a residence lot, a rented stall or a landlord's driveway also creates its own pressure: parking fees, a possible ticket, and a landlord or building manager who wants the space back.
Three situations come up most:
- Non-running car. Blown engine, failed transmission, dead battery you gave up on, or a body damaged in a collision.
- Failed safety inspection. The repair quote is higher than the car is worth.
- Leaving town or the country. International students finishing a program, or anyone relocating, need the car gone on a deadline.
Your options for disposing of a car in Calgary
The City of Calgary lists the general routes on its page about what to do with end-of-life cars: some charities accept used cars and issue charitable tax receipts, and some private companies may buy end-of-life vehicles, charge a fee or take them for free. The city's advice is to check with each organization what vehicles it accepts. That last point matters, because "free" and "cash" are very different outcomes.
Here is how the options compare for a student.
| Option | Speed | Towing | What you get | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sell to a junk car buyer | Often same day or within days | Usually included, confirm first | Cash on pickup | Non-running or damaged cars, tight deadlines |
| Donate to a charity | Days to weeks | Varies | Possible tax receipt | Students with taxable income who are not in a hurry |
| Private sale online | Days to months | You arrange it | Highest price if the car runs | Cars that still drive and pass inspection |
| Part it out yourself | Weeks | You arrange it | Parts money for lots of work | Students with tools, space and time |
| Haul it to a scrapyard | One day, but you pay for the tow | You pay | Scrap value, minus towing | Rarely worth it for a car that cannot drive |
Selling to a junk car buyer
This is the option built for a car that does not run. A buyer values the car on its parts and scrap metal, sends a tow truck and pays when the car leaves. We work this way: cash offers and free towing for junk, non-running, damaged, scrap and failed-inspection vehicles across Calgary and Okotoks, including cars with a blown engine or transmission failure. You do not need the car to start, and you do not need to clean it up for buyers.
What to confirm before you agree:
- The quote you were given is the amount you will be paid, with no towing or admin deduction at the door.
- Who is coming, when, and whether payment happens on the spot.
- What paperwork they will hand you after the sale.
Donating the car
Donation can make sense if you have income to claim a receipt against. A student with little or no taxable income often gets no real benefit from a receipt, and charities may not accept a car that cannot be driven or towed cheaply. If you are weighing this route, our note on donating a car versus selling it explains the trade-off.
Selling privately
A car that runs and passes inspection can fetch more from a private buyer than from a scrap buyer. The cost is effort: photos, messages, no-shows, test drives, and a bill of sale. If the car is dead, most private buyers will not bother, and the ones who do will push the price down hard.
Parting out or hauling it yourself
Pulling parts only pays if you know what sells and have somewhere to work. Hiring a tow to a yard yourself eats into whatever the metal is worth. For a student, both usually cost more in time and cash than they return.
How selling a junk car to us works
The process is three steps:
- Contact us. Tell us the make, model, year, condition and where the car is parked. A residence lot, a street or a driveway is fine, as long as we can reach it.
- We pick up the car. We tow it, free of charge, and we aim for same-day pickup.
- You get paid. Cash on pickup, with no hidden fees.
If you want to see what a typical timeline looks like, our guide to junk car pickup in Calgary walks through it, and our page on fast junk car pickup in Calgary covers what affects how quickly a truck can reach you.
What the car is worth
We do not publish fixed prices, because a quote depends on the vehicle: its weight, make, year, whether major parts are intact and where it is. A heavier car with a complete body and sound parts is generally worth more than a stripped shell. For a sense of the factors, read what a scrap car is worth in Calgary. The only way to know your number is to ask for a quote.
Paperwork: what to have ready
Sellers in Alberta handle two separate things: proving the car is yours to sell, and ending your own registration and insurance on it.
Before the truck arrives
- Photo ID. The name on your ID should match the name on the vehicle registration.
- Registration or ownership document. Find the registration certificate or whatever you received when you bought the car. If the car was a family hand-down and is still in a parent's name, the parent is the legal owner and needs to be part of the sale.
- Keys, if you have them. A car without keys can still be removed, so tell the buyer.
- A bill of sale or receipt from the buyer showing the vehicle details, the amount paid and both parties' names. Keep it. It is your proof that the car is no longer yours if a parking ticket or toll ever shows up.
- Your belongings. Check the glovebox, trunk and under the seats. Remove parking passes, student cards, documents and any personal items.
If a lender still has a lien on the car, sort that out first, because the buyer needs a clear title to the vehicle. If you are unsure whether anything is owing, ask the lender or a registry agent before you book a pickup.
Cancel the registration
Once the car is gone, cancel the registration so you stop being responsible for it. The Government of Alberta explains the process on its page about cancelling a vehicle registration. Two points from that page matter for students on a budget: registry agent service fees cannot be deducted from your registration refund, and eligible refunds are issued by cheque in approximately four to six weeks, with overdue fines deducted if you have any. If you are leaving the country, give the registry a mailing address where the cheque can reach you, such as a family member's, or ask a registry agent what your options are before you go.

Handle your insurance
Your insurance is a separate arrangement from the registration. Call your insurer after the car has been picked up, tell them the vehicle was sold for scrap, and ask about cancelling the policy or moving it to another vehicle. Do not cancel it before the car leaves your hands: if something happens in the meantime, you want to be covered. Ask the insurer about any refund and how long it takes.
How to vet a buyer before you say yes
Students get targeted by lowball offers and by companies that quote a high number on the phone and cut it at the curb. A few checks protect you.
Licensing and legitimacy
The City of Calgary requires business licences for scrap metal and salvage yards, junkyards and salvage collectors, as set out on its page about opening a waste and recycling business. Ask a buyer about their business licence, and be wary of anyone who is vague about who they are or where the car is going.
Environmental handling
End-of-life vehicles contain fluids, batteries and other materials that should be handled properly. The Automotive Recyclers of Canada developed a national environmental code to standardize end-of-life vehicle recycling and protect water, air and soil. Ask your buyer how the car will be processed.
Red flags
- A quote that changes when the truck arrives.
- A fee for towing that was described as free.
- Pressure to sign a blank document.
- Payment promised later, by cheque or e-transfer, when you were told cash on pickup.
- A buyer who will not give you a receipt.
Special cases for students
The car is in a parent's or friend's name
The registered owner has to be involved. They sign, show ID and receive the payment, or tell you in writing that you may receive it. Sort this before you call, because it is the most common reason a pickup stalls.
You are an international student leaving Calgary
Work backwards from your departure date. Book the pickup at least a few days before you leave, and allow time for the cancellation. Cancel registration and insurance, and leave an address for the refund cheque. If your study permit or flight date is tight, use a same-day option instead of a private sale you cannot guarantee.

The car was towed or is in an impound lot
A car sitting in an impound lot racks up fees every day. If it is not worth the cost of getting it out, you still need to deal with it quickly. See our guides on impound lot vehicles and selling a car from a Calgary impound lot.
The car has a blown engine or failed transmission
Students often assume that a car with a seized engine has no value. It still has metal and parts. Our page on selling a car with a blown engine or transmission failure explains how that is treated.
You live in Okotoks or just outside the city
We also serve Okotoks. See our page for cash for junk cars in Okotoks.
Our perspective
We see the same story every term: a student with a car that cost more to repair than it was worth, a parking stall they are paying for, and a week with three exams in it. The answer is rarely a long listing or a charity application. It is one phone call, a tow truck that shows up, and money in hand.
Our model is simple and we say it plainly. We buy junk, non-running, damaged, scrap and failed-inspection vehicles, we resell the usable parts and recover the scrap metal, and that is how we can tow for free and pay you on pickup. There is nothing hidden in it, because the car's value to us is the same one we describe to you.
Local experience matters here. We work Calgary and Okotoks every day, so we know how to get to a residence lot, an alley or a driveway, and we know the paperwork a Calgary seller needs afterward. Our aim is that you spend ten minutes on the sale, not ten days.

Ready to sell? Here is what we offer
We buy cars in any condition, running or not, and our three-step process takes you from call to cash. We tow for free, aim for same-day pickup and pay on the spot. Tell us about your car and we will give you a quote on our scrap car removal page, or start from our main page.

We also take ATVs and side-by-sides, so if a student's toys are cluttering the garage, mention them when you call.
A simple timeline to follow

FAQ
Can I sell a car that does not run?
Yes. A junk car buyer values the car on its parts and scrap metal, so it does not need to start or drive. We tow it for free from where it is parked, whether that is a driveway, a street or a residence lot.
Do I need to be the registered owner?
Yes, or you need the registered owner's involvement. If the car is still in a parent's or friend's name, they should sign and show ID. Sorting this out before you call avoids delays on pickup day.
What do I do with my plates and insurance afterward?
Cancel the registration at an Alberta registry agent, which can produce a refund by cheque in roughly four to six weeks. Then call your insurer to cancel or move the policy once the car has left your hands. Ask your registry agent exactly what to do with the plates.
How fast can the car be picked up?
We aim for same-day pickup in Calgary and Okotoks. Timing depends on where the car is and how busy the day is, so give us your address and a time that suits you when you call.
Is it better to donate the car?
Donation suits people who have taxable income to claim a receipt against and no deadline. If you need the car gone quickly and want money in your pocket, selling to a junk car buyer is usually the more practical route for a student.
